Third Time Ice Cream Brings New Tastes to the Square

In Union Square, ice cream is a year-round treat. In the fall of 2024 Nick Ladin-Sienne opened Third Time Ice Cream in Bow Market with exactly that in mind. With unique ingredients and rotating flavors, Third Time is sure to satiate your sweet tooth. Read on to learn more about Nick’s passion for ice cream and why he went from LA lawyer to Somerville small business owner.

Tell us a little about Third Time!

Third Time Ice Cream is a new type of scoop shop! Our ice cream is made in tiny batches and the full menu rotates monthly. Our ice creams, gelati, and sorbets are all made in house from scratch with local and organic or biodynamic ingredients whenever possible. 

What inspired you to start a business? How did this feeling grow once you actually started your business?

I started my business because after six years of practicing law I wanted to reconnect with myself and with my local community. I lived in Los Angeles for years and went to a west coast ice cream chain monthly that had unique, available-nowhere-else, and delicious flavors that changed every month. I generally tried at least one or two of their seasonal flavors monthly. 

I missed that experience when I moved back here in January 2020 (yeah, not a great time to move anywhere—who knew?) and felt that even with all the great ice cream here, we didn’t have something quite like that. At our core, Third Time Ice Cream is about two things: excellence and excitement in the product and providing warm hospitality. Meeting so many people who are so excited about the product and getting to know regulars has been exactly the re-connection I had been looking for when jumping into this.

What aspect of your business makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?

Being able to connect with the residents of Union Square and the surrounding areas is so special.  When I walk around the area now, I feel like I see my regulars all over the place and get to wave hello or stop and chat. Union Square feels like home!

Is there anything else you think a Square customer would like to know?

The most important thing to know about Third Time Ice Cream is that we change all flavors approximately every month and you can always try as many flavors as you want to before ordering (seriously, it’s on our menu, bolded, and highlighted and people still don’t believe me).
