Say Hello to Make & Mend!
Published February 2023
Whether it's with a Valentine or Palentine, who wouldn’t want to spend some quality time crafting with a loved one? Stop by Make & Mend for all the supplies you’ll need to get crafty with your cutie this weekend!
We took a moment with Emily Tirella, who opened Make & Mend in 2017, to discuss weaving sustainability into the craft industry.
Tell us a little bit about your business!
We're a thrift store for art supplies! We accept donations of gently-used creative materials and distribute them to the community at an affordable price.
What inspired you to start Make & Mend?
I was inspired during my time in art school—seeing all the waste that went into the creative industry, I decided to do something about it. Seeing the way makers of all kinds and ages participate in this concept is so special.
What aspect of your business makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?
Seeing how artists are able to be more sustainable in their art practice makes me so proud! Also seeing the lifecycle of a material, from donation, to processing to being sold and then used again.
How do you #LoveUnionSquare?
As a Union Square resident, I love the community here. From crossing guards to local businesses, it really feels like we all know each other which is so nice in a huge city.
Is there anything else we should know?
We accept unwanted creative materials as donations so if you're tidying up, keep us in mind!
Visit Emily at Make & Mend Mon-Thurs 11am-6pm and Fri & Sat 11am-7pm.
