Taste the Pride of Peru with Rosy

Published April 2023

What do anticuchos, ceviche de pescado, and pisco sours have in common? These delicious Peruvian staples are all featured on Machu Picchu’s menu! We sat down with Rosy Cerna, who opened Machu Picchu Restaurant at 307 Somerville Ave all the way back in 2000, to chat about the importance of highlighting the diversity of our community.

Tell us a little bit about your business!

Machu Picchu strives to serve you its most authentic Peruvian dishes by using quality ingredients imported directly from Peru to give you the most flavorful and authentic experience. We have the best Peruvian food without the flight.

What inspired you to start a business?

I immigrated from Peru to Somerville in 1995. At the time, there were little to no options for Peruvian food in the area. It was impossible to find the right ingredients to cook my favorite Peruvian meals at US grocery stores. My home sickness then led to a fantastic opportunity that has now given Peruvian food a spot on the Boston restaurant map. Being able to bring Peru to Boston has been very heartwarming to me.

What makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?

The community of Somerville is like no other. I am so proud to share my Peruvian culture with the wonderful community of Somerville. After 22 years, Machu Picchu continues to share our culture and provide a unique experience. A melting pot of many diverse cultures live in this city and it makes me very proud to be a part of its community.

How do you #LoveUnionSquare?
