Open since November 5, 2024, Life Alive is one of the newest additions to Union’s vibrant array of businesses. Touting made-from-scratch healthy menu items such as grain bowls and smoothies, Life Alive aims to create an organic oasis. Life Alive Union Square’s GM Richie Fairbairn took a moment to share the ethos behind the cafe and why they’re excited to be a part of the Union Square community.
Tell us a little about Life Alive!
Life Alive offers an organic, plant-forward menu including warm grain bowls, salads, noodle bowls, smoothies, açaí bowls, cold-pressed juices, and wellness lattes all artfully crafted from scratch daily. The cafe features an elevated, colorful design, eclectic art, cozy nooks, ample plugs and free wifi; inviting guests to meet, linger, and simply feel at home.
What was the inspiration behind Life Alive?
We started Life Alive in Lowell, MA in 2004 with a goal of serving convenient, organic, whole food in a welcoming space. We knew we were onto something when we consistently heard from guests that they felt uplifted and filled with energy after dining with us.
We’ve learned a lot over the last 20 years about people, food, and mood. It’s become more clear that eating positively—in a way that fosters joy, nourishes our bodies, and respects the planet—is central to living positively.
We could not be more excited to join the community here in Union Square and share this joy and vision with this special neighborhood.
What aspect of your business makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?
We are most proud of our commitment to sourcing organic ingredients and crafting each meal to order from scratch. We believe that coming together over a good meal that also makes you feel really good can be powerful!
We also love to participate in and give back to the community whenever we can. Shout out to the Somerville Community Growing Center for being our opening day community partner!

We can’t wait to participate in the vibrant and exciting events in this community like the Holiday Stroll and Fluff Fest!

Visit Life Alive’s brand new cafe 7am-9pm daily, located just steps from the Union Square Green Line Station at 20-50 Prospect Street.
