Himalayan Kitchen Turns Up the Heat
Published August 2023
Himalayan Kitchen has been family-owned and -operated since their opening at 40 Bow Street in 2016. Known for serving authentic Nepalese and Indian cuisine and drool-worthy fusion pizzas, Himalayan Kitchen brings can’t-miss spice to the Square. We took a moment to learn about the inspiration behind the business from Uttam Shrestha, co-owner of Himalayan Kitchen alongside his sister, Rabina Lockett, and her husband, Jay Lockett.
What inspired you to start a business?
My sister Rabina and I moved to Union Square when we were students at Northeastern University. We constantly searched for a restaurant that served authentic Nepalese food. Despite the abundance of Indian restaurants in the area, unfortunately we always felt the taste from back home was missing. Being a food lover with a great passion for cooking, I had been experimenting with various cuisines since I was a child. This deep-seated passion for cooking unexpectedly shifted my aspirations, moving me to fulfill my dream of opening a restaurant where I could recreate that cherished taste we had been longing for.
On the other hand, Jay had always nurtured a desire to delve into the world of entrepreneurship. He thrives on engaging with people and building a strong sense of community. It was during this time that we both realized that by joining forces, we could create something unique and transformative in the dining experience, thus giving birth to the idea of "Himalayan Kitchen."
What aspect of your business makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?
As a small brick-and-mortar business situated in the heart of Union Square, witnessing people from different parts of the world coming to enjoy our food and leaving with broad smiles of contentment fills us with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. Moreover, the active involvement and support of the community in every aspect of our business endeavors adds to our pride in every conceivable manner. We firmly believe that the success of Himalayan Kitchen lies not only in the authenticity of our flavors but also in the relationships we have fostered with our patrons, partners, and associates—making us proud leaders in our industry.
