With a focus on celebrating sustainability, Trang Trinh started Green Tiger & Co. in 2023 and eventually found a brick-and-mortar home at Bow Market in 2024. In between bringing you all of your eco-friendly and low-waste needs, Trang aims to make the world (and Union!) a better place.
Tell us a little bit about Green Tiger & Co.!
Green Tiger & Co. is a low-waste refillery and sustainable goods general store that brings you carefully selected products that emphasize sustainable ingredients, natural materials, artisanal craft, and local makers. We aim to engage customers in a lifestyle that reduces waste and single-use plastics, in order to celebrate our wellbeing, community, and the planet.
What inspired you to start a business? How did this feeling grow once you actually started your business?
Our inspiration is to be a place of discovery and appreciation for the people, community, and planet. The product selection centers around the simple idea that what’s good for you is also good for the planet. This means less exposure to single-use plastic and harmful ingredients, less waste, and a sense of belonging or engagement with the community.
Our feeling grows stronger as we interact with customers everyday—their enthusiasm drives us even more to build community and to provide a wider selection of sustainable products that can encourage more folks to adopt refillable essentials and embrace eco-friendly habits.
What aspect of your business makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?
Besides our environmental mission, we are proud to be able to select incredible products from local, New England based makers, woman-owned, and BIPOC businesses. On our website, you can shop by intention and can filter our products by these brand values.
We are also so happy to be a part of the vibrant Bow Market and Union Square community. The support and engagement we receive from our customers make the store more exciting and relevant to the community. For example, customers donate jars and paper bags for others to use and our small community lending library that focuses on well-being and environmental issues is quite active!
Last year we hosted a plant swap event where everyone could donate or take home a plant. It was great to see the positive feedback and we're looking forward to bringing more events like this to the community!
How do you #LoveUnionSquare?
Union Square is vibrant with culture. Simply put, that means art, music, and delicious food with incredible inclusiveness and diversity on every block!
If you were to plan the perfect outing in Union Square, where would you go and what would you do?
I would start off with a lunch of ceviche and seafood fried rice at Machu Picchu, then stop by Bow Market retail shops to check out the wonderful local vendors. I like stationery and fountain pens, so I'd spend a lot of time browsing at Tiny Turns. Then I'd make my way upstairs at Bow, there are always new things to check out at the different shops there.
After I'm done with shopping, I’d grab a latte at Remnant and fries from Saus and lounge around in the Bow courtyard if the weather is nice. After that, I'd make my way to Maprang to get some delicious sweets to bring home, and then on to one of my favorite restaurants, Field & Vine, for a wonderful farm-to-table dinner!
Do you have any "behind the scenes" or fun facts that a customer might not know already?
Our favorite moments are when we ship the large volume containers back to the manufacturers to be sanitized and reused. This ensures that we deliver on our part in a closed-loop system that reduces waste. Another fun "behind the scenes" moment would be asking ourselves "does this look like a good box to keep?" daily since we save the majority of shipping and packing materials to either be reused at the store or donated to our local Buy Nothing Community.
