Good Food For All: Sustaining a more inclusive Farmers Market

  • Union Square Somerville, MA 02143 USA (map)

For a 6th year, Union Square Main Streets and local businesses proudly present Good Food for All, a week-long community campaign to raise awareness and funds for the Union Square Farmers Market’s local SNAP match.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, previously Food Stamps) recipients often find fresh, local food at farmers markets inaccessible, yet these foods are vital for strong and healthy immune systems. Since 2005, USMS has raised $66,500 to match SNAP dollars, making it possible for more neighbors to participate in and enjoy the bounty of our Farmers Market.

Demand for the SNAP match at the Farmers Market has already increased 217% since the beginning of the pandemic. Now, resilient Somerville residents continue to recover from the impact of COVID-19 with the recent end of both the USDA’s and Massachusetts’ state funded emergency SNAP allotments. This is even more apparent with a marked 39% increase in participation in the Union Square Farmers Market’s SNAP match in the first month of the 2023 season alone. While this increase shows that fresh food continues to be a priority for all neighbors, it also means Good Food For All is even more important than ever.

Participating businesses show their dedication to the Union Square community by donating in support of the SNAP Match – funds that will be spent at the Union Square Farmers Market, not at their own brick-and-mortars. Prioritizing community health is a uniquely-Union value, and one that Good Food For All is proud to highlight throughout the fundraiser. We celebrate these businesses and hope that you do too by dining, shopping, and playing with them.

Again we invite you, friends and neighbors, to come to the table and to help us sustain an inclusive Farmers Market.
