In addition to delicious Mexican food, El Potro serves a love for Union Square

El Potro Mexican Bar & Grill has been serving Union Square delicious tacos, enchiladas, margaritas, and so much more since 2006. We sat down with Business Manager Joe Carreiro to learn more about how they are bringing community-centered Mexican food to the Square.
What inspired you to start a business?
El Potro is a family-owned and -run Mexican restaurant. Our owners wanted to start a family-oriented business in a neighborhood that gave so much back to the community. They had worked in the restaurant industry for many decades combined, so the opportunity to open their own business was something that, although scary, was something they always wanted to do.
What aspect of your business makes you most proud to be a business leader in our community?
Even though I do not own El Potro, I grew up in Somerville and being a part of the community here allows me to stay in touch with a place that I love to the core.
What’s the single most important reason for your success?
Customers, and treating them like family. We always want our customers to feel at home, and we work hard every day to make sure that they experience the warmth of home, every time they step through the door.
How do you #LoveUnionSquare?
I love the fabric of small main streets and neighborhoods, which I hope never change. We love being part of such a great community and really take strength in the relationship we have formed with the friends and neighbors in the Square. Personally "community" means so much to me, and I am thankful that my ownership group has given me the ability to really leave a big footprint on building and being part of the larger community, whether it's the other #yumunion community of restaurants, or generally the fabric of all of the great shops, businesses, and people of the Square.
Anything else we should know?
Our local community means so much to us, and we always want to do all we can to support our friends and neighbors. We want to make sure that Union Square always remains strong and filled with "small" family-run businesses. We love to see you and hope you can come and visit any time.
