MBTA Proposes Service Cuts

The MBTA, struggling with debt, has proposed fare hikes on all routes and possible service cuts including to the Green Line to Lechmere as well as to six Somerville bus routes (80, 85, 90, 92, 95, and 96). The proposal also calls for ending Commuter Rail service on weekends and after 10 p.m. on weekdays.

For Union Square is still waiting for the legally mandated extension of the Greenline with nearby stations at Union Square, Washington Street and Wilson Square. This proposed cut eliminates bus #85 that brings passengers from Spring Hill, through Union Square and to Kendall Square. It’s a key link to the Red Line and to MIT.  The loss of other routes will have significant impact on residents, including the #95 from Medford Square to Sullivan Square, a route serving the Mystic Housing Development.

Service cuts are proposed throughout the region is likely to lead to an increase of vehicular traffic moving through Somerville, as more than 2 million trips per year are expected to be eliminated.

Concerned residents may comment through March 1 either by emailing the MBTA at fareproposal@mbta.com or calling the MBTA at 617-222-3200.

A public meeting will also be held in Somerville on February 28, 6:00 to 8:00 pm, at Somerville High. For details and a list of public meetings being held in nearby towns, please click HERE.
