The market, held every Saturday from June 4 through October 29, seeks vendors offering a wide range of Massachusetts products. We anticipate the return of most, if not all, of our beloved farms and producers of previous years. We’re hoping to find some new vendors for the 2011 season, in particular those able to expand our offerings with dairy products (cheese, milk), fish (wouldn’t fresh shellfish and line caught fish be awesome?), and specialty produce.
One notable detail about the Union Square Market: we’re a “Class A” market which means our vendors selling items they’ve grown, harvested or created themselves. Unlike Haymarket where the vendors resell items from wholesalers and offer items often at less than optimum freshness, all products at the Union Square Farmers Market are locally grown — and as the slogan says, Massachusetts grown and fresh.
We again welcome specialty food producers to join us in our guest vendor space. While always a popular spot for fledging food businesses to test our market, we’re seeing already even more interest this season. Our market manager, Adrianne Schaefer, has been managing the Somerville Winter Farmers Market up at the Armory since January so she’s making lots of new contacts and they’re clamoring. For that guest space, we provide the tent and table, making it even easier to take part. We try maximize variety so typically guests are invited to join us at most only a couple times in the 22-week season.
With that guest vendor spot is in such demand and space on the plaza is limited, this year we’ve decided that instead of scheduling community groups here, if there’s non-profits and similar service and educational projects wishing to participate, we’ll bunk them in with the market manager’s booth. Deadline for priority vendor selection is March 15. Wineries wanting to participate should apply by this date as well since there’s additional city and state permitting they’ll need to seek since they’re selling alcohol. Guest vendors, we’ll accept applications throughout the season but know that those dates fill up quickly so better to apply early.
