New Farmers Market Highlights Specialty Local Foods

Building on our well-attended and vibrant Saturday morning farmers market, Union Square Main Streets launches a second market to celebrate the specialty foods produced by Massachusetts farms.

The items at Swirl & Slice: Union Square Specialty Food Market will be those you’d pack for a romantic, summer picnic or bring for a weekend away with friends. Wine, cheese, cured meats, breads, jams, pickles and other locally-produced, refined foods that typically take the back seat at other farmers’ markets will be the stars here.  Bread and other baked goods, roasted nuts, and cut flowers are also expected to be among the offerings.

Swirl & Slice: Union Square Specialty Food Market will take place Thursday evenings, 5 pm to 8 pm, June 14 to September 20.  The call for vendors is now open with the first round of applications reviewed on April 15.

Swirl & Slice will have a very different feeling from the Saturday market.  It will be more leisurely, as the sunsets on these summer evenings, the vendors gathered under a canopy of lit trees while a live jazz band performs. The patios of nearby restaurants will be active during and after the market. We plan to host educational programs to highlight vendor products.

Somerville’s Union Square boasts a number of specialty food stores and restaurants and has a strong reputation among food lovers. By gathering specialty producers together we hope to not only provide a new sales opportunity but also a venue to better introduce the public on the range of local foods available.
