    Playing with Lions and Lambs

Ah, spring! And the sap is flowing in the trees.

It's the annual Maple Syrup Boil Down presented by the Community Growing Center and Groundwork Somerville. Join in on Friday and Saturday, March 13 and 14 from 10am- 4pm (or until the sap has evaporated on Saturday, and if there's snow or rain the event moves to the Sunday.)

Come watch as sap from local trees is boiled down into pure maple syrup over a warm fire. There will be syrup- tasting, live music, and kids' activities, throughout the weekend. Takes place at the Somerville Community Growing Center, 22 Vinal Ave, between Summer St and Highland Ave on the edge of Union Square.

The event is presented by the Community Growing Center and Ground work Somerville.

And to get your body's own sap, that blood moving again, nothing like a good stretch.

Instructor Jenn Pici is hosting a long practice from 2 to 4:30pm where she'll take you through each pose to awaken your senses. There will be time to meditate, to journal, and awaken every cell to the new season.

Can't make the special class? There's the regular sessions of yoga every Monday and Friday 6:30 to 7:45 as well as Shobu's whole line up of aikido classes.

    Somerville Reconstruction Begins Again
    som ave construction

After a winter hiatus, the next phase of the Somerville Avenue reconstruction begins anew this spring with reconstruction of the sidewalks the whole stretch from just outside Porter Square into Union Square.

The City of Somerville is hosting a neighborhood meeting to discuss this work on Tuesday, March 10 at 6 pm at the Argenziano School, 290 Washington Street.

This major roadway project is slated to be completed by the end of 2009 when we'll be able to celebrate not only improved infrastructure underground with sewer and storm drains, but also new intersection signals, lights, benches, and a bike lane.

A New Kind of Spelling Bee
    spelling bee

The folks of Second Wednesdays can't be contained by that moniker so they're breaking free with the name CFT - Community Fun Time. Since their next event is on the third Wednesday, the change seems necessary.

The USMS team behind these inventive events aren't contained by any sense of the ordinary either. For Wednesday, March 18 this isn't your grandma's English class as they host an Urban Dictionary Spelling Bee.

The Urban Dictionary celebrates the inventiveness of our language capturing our lived experience in all its bawdy, silly, mundane and observational, wry humor.

Contestants will be called to accurately spell words and phrases from the Urban Dictionary, such as "rebooty" (a renewed relationship with an ex, as in, "After they broke up, Joe still called Kate for some rebooty on weekends."), "loltard" (someone who overuses LOL, and it's derivatives which are almost exclusively non-humorous.) or "earjacking" (making your friends listen to horrible music against their will, as in "I hate riding in the van with her; I'm always earjacked!") You're sure to get an education at this event.

Important Meetings for the Green Line
    rail tracks to Boston
Two big things coming up regarding transportation.

There's a hearing on Gov. Patrick's proposed gas tax scheduled for 1 pm on Wednesday March 11, 2009 at the State House, Room A-1. STEP, our city's transit advocates, are saying this may be the single most important hearing for Somerville transit, walk and bike advocates since 2004. They are encouraging support of the gas tax so that the state can maintain MBTA service without another hike in fares, can fix roads and bridges in need of repair because maintenance has been deferred, and provides much needed public transportation for projects like the Green Line extension.

And talking about the Green Line extension. . . The Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation (EOT) is holding two public meetings to present an overview of the project, an environmental analysis, recommendations for station sites, and the preferred project alignment. At these meetings, EOT is seeking public comment in advance of filing a Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Assessment (DEIR/EA) for the Green Line Extension.

At both meetings, there will be an Open House from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, where members of the project team will be available to answer questions about the project. The meeting presentation will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by a public question and comment period. After a brief presentation by EOT, the moderator will recognize members of the public who would like to make comments.
