Canning Demo at Union Farmers Market September 3

From Adrianne Schaefer, Union Square Farmers Market Manager

If you have been to the market the past couple weeks, you’ll agree that the height of the season is here. Giant heirloom tomatoes in every color, a variety of juicy cukes, and a bounty of fruit… I can’t even begin to list!

Want to enjoy this gorgeous produce year-round? Canning is easier than you think. Stop by the Market Manager table on September 3 to learn to can everything from jam and pickles to salsa and applesauce. And to learn why you won’t get botulism, I promise.

Our local canning expert is Sam Musher. A middle school librarian, Sam’s been living off farmer’s market produce for the last four winters, thanks to canning, dehydrating, and a chest freezer. She has taught canning at this market and other venues, and would be happy to answer any questions you have about the locavore life.

Sam will be doing a demo at 10am and 11am, but stop by anytime from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, September 3, 2011 to chat with her and ask questions.

The Pennies, a local Americana band and Union Square Farmers Market favorite will be playing this Saturday from 10-12:30.

Coming Up Next week, September 10: Join us for  Kids Yoga on the Plaza led by Janine Duffy, 9:15-10am in the band tent. Animal Farm will be playing their blend of jazz, folk, and pop. They write songs about the most human of animals – from a vegetarian spider, to a bat that’s afraid of the dark, to a two-headed turtle that just can’t get along. In addition to farmers markets, these musicians/educators offer interactive shows for schools, camps, and community centers.

Union Square Farmers Market Fundraiser: We are currently accepting donations for market operations and have snazzy market buttons to give in return. Stop by the market manager booth to show your support.

Get Updates: Want to know what will be at the market ahead of time, so you can plan your weekend shopping? Link to us on Facebook and Twitter to find out ahead of time what will be at the market each week and to get live updates from the market on Saturdays.
