Call for Vendors, Performers

The City of Somerville is planning another action packed season of SomerStreets events across our fine municipality.  They’re putting the call out to performers and craft vendors to join in the festivities. SomerStreets ends its season on Somerville Ave with activities from Union to Porter Squares on Sunday, October 28th. Until then there’s a SomerStreets happening each month starting in June.

Live Music Brings Country, Bluegrass, Jazz to Cantina La Mexicana

Here in Union Square we love our live music, but some of us, on the golden side of forty, aren’t the night owls we once were.  When the bands take the stage at ten o’clock or even eleven, we’re thinking about hitting the pillow rather than the bar.

So it’s very pleasing that the Cantina La Mexicana, 247 Washington Street,  has just launched a series of performances for those of us who love intimate music venues yet long for an earlier night.  Producer Peter Ward, a familiar face to visitors of the Union Square Farmers Market after his season as market manager, is booking the venue.  He currently has scheduled the gigs to start at 8:oo pm or 8:30 for most Thursdays and Fridays.  ”We’re feeling our way,” he says, as he considers even early sets at 6:00 or 7:00 on week nights if there’s sufficient interest and crowds.

Peter’s line-up focuses on country, blues, bluegrass, with some jazz and swing for extra flavor.  Last week at the inaugural event with Roy Sludge Trio featuring Duke Levine, it was standing room only as guests sipped their margaritas and Mexican brews to low voiced country tunes that would have had Johnny Cash thinking a long-lost brother was in town.

Dates and start times may change so double check with the Cantina La Mexicana before venturing out.

August 6 at the Union Square Farmers Market

This Saturday the Union Square Farmers Market we’ve got several special guests.

Over in the music tent we’ve got The Agbekor Drum & Dance Society. This group studies and performs music and dance from Ghana, West Africa. The performance at the Market will feature the complex rhythms of the Ewe people from southeastern Ghana. Using the traditional Ewe ensemble of drums, rattles and bells as well as their voices, Society members will excite audiences with the upbeat grooves of this rich tradition.

At the Market Manager’s booth, meet with the team from Lost in Boston of the MIT Media Lab.  They’ve installed digital signs in several store windows around Union Square that present public  information about when exactly to expect the arrival of buses on each of the MBTA lines serving the neighborhood, as well as info on community events.

Over beside Cook’s (also known as the Pie Lady) check out Artcycle, an artist-made custom bike.  At the bike you can pick up info on classes and events at Cambridge Center for Adult Education and its newest program, Community Supported Art.  Modeled after CSA farm shares, you buy a “share” in a group of artists, and at the end of the summer each shareholder receives a box full of original art.  They’ve sold out this round, but CSArt will return next spring with a fresh crop of artists.
