About Somerville Arts Council

Since 1985, the Somerville Arts Council has been producing craft events that help the economic and creative growth of the city. Part of that has been the successful series of ArtsUnion craft fairs: Boston Handmade Marketplace, Sew What?!?!, and the Rock and Roll Yard Sale. It has also included building ArtBeat into a festival that includes 80+ incredible vendors. We continue this tradition now by including craft vendors in events like the Hungry Tiger Street Festival.

Camp Out at Lincoln Park

Who says you need to travel far to go camping? The Great Urban Campout is happening right here in Union Square! Join the Facebook Event page and/or indicate your plans to attend here.

At this second annual event, circle around the campfire for songs, s’mores, and stories. Families and anyone else who likes to camp are welcome to  spend the night in Lincoln Park or, if you’d rather sleep at home, just join in for afternoon/evening activities.

It all takes place on the soccer field at Lincoln Park off Washington Street on Saturday, July 23, 2011. Set up tents anytime from 12:00 noon on and stay until the next morning of Sunday, July 24th. Activities take place through the afternoon and evening for all.

WHAT TO BRING: Camping stuff (tents, air mattress, chairs), instruments, and stories to share.

FOOD: We have grills and portable fire pits, so feel free to bring food to grill, marshmallows to roast, and a potluck dish to share with other campers. There will be a pancake breakfast with lots of coffee the next morning for anyone who makes it through the night.

AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES: Games and activities for pre-school and school-aged kids, adult/kid challenges, and get-to-know each other challenges.

EVENING ACTIVITIES: Songs and stories by the fire.

BATHROOMS: There will be two port-a-potties on site and, up until 11:00 p.m., participants can use the facilities at a neighbors’ house that abuts the park.

SECURITY: There should be plenty of adults on hand and in ear-shot to keep an eye on things. Also, the Police Department will send a cruiser by regularly throughout the night and will have an officer on site from midnight until 4:00 a.m.

RAIN DATE: If rain is forecast for Saturday the 23rd, the campout will be held on Friday the 22nd. If rain is forecast for both Friday and Saturday, the campout will be cancelled.

REGULARS: Please note alcohol and animals are not allowed in this park. Also, the portable fire pit must be used only if food preparation is occurring. Quiet hours will be from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

This event is co-sponsored by the City of Somerville’s Recreation Department and parent volunteers. If you have questions, please contact Stephanie Hirsch at shirsch@sprynet.com or 617-512-4847. For updates, see: www.lincolnparksomerville.com

Building a Shop Local Movement for Somerville Designers

Design Annex launches biz.buzz, a new kind of networking event for design professionals in Somerville on July 28. At biz.buzz, we’re building a shop local movement for Somerville’s creative enterprises. Participants won’t just exchange their contact information; they’ll trade advice, referrals, and services to make each other’s businesses stronger. This event is the first of a quarterly series to bring together the city’s vibrant design community to grow this dynamic industry.

  • Join us for biz.buzz: Thursday, July 28, 6-9 pm at Precinct. Free.
  • RSVP and don’t forget to bring your business cards!

While you likely know the big design players in Somerville such as Arrowstreet, Moshe Safdie and Altitude, you may not know the literally hundreds of smaller scale creative businesses bustling here in Somerville and making their own bold mark. The Design Annex’s goal is to interconnect this community of people working at the intersection of commercial and creative and through the shared connections to thrive together. Somerville has been a quiet hub design and creative businesses and it’s time we made some noise, locally and nationally.

This event supports Union Square Main Streets’ efforts, through the Design Annex, to grow the creative economy in Somerville. The Design Annex provides the resources to grow creative businesses including shared office space and equipment, networking, and advocacy for industry needs. Since its founding just 18 months ago, 25 small creative businesses have used the Annex’s resources and community to help grow their enterprises.

The networking series biz.buzz is our first big step towards accomplishing our goal of a tightly networked, strong design community in Somerville. Please join us and other creative business professionals to relax, share ideas, and share some drinks on Thursday, July 28, 6-9 pm at Precinct. RSVP to info@dannex.org, and don’t forget to bring your business cards!

Artisan’s Asylum, Growing Fast!

This fall, Artisan’s Asylum is moving into a 25,000 square foot, temperature-controlled, ground floor warehouse space. The organization, after just one year, is  expanding and professionalizing all of their shop spaces, hiring full-time staff, and providing over 15,000 square feet of rental studio space to over 100 artists, artisans, entrepreneurs and small businesses.  Their goal: to become the well-equipped workshop, studio, or garage that every creative type in Somerville, Cambridge and Boston has ever dreamed of.

They are hosting an open house and fundraising event at their new space at 10 Tyler Street in Somerville on July 9, 2011 from 7-11PM. A $25 suggested donation at the door will help defray the costs to move and equip the new space.

Schedule for the night includes:

+ A Meet & Greet from 7-8PM, complete with complimentary food and drink and tours of the vision of the new space

+ Presentations at 8PM from Gui Cavalcanti, President of Artisan’s Asylum, Inc., and Stephen Houdlette, Economic Development Specialist in Somerville’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development

+ Performances throughout the night from Esh Aerial Arts, Andrew Insect & Ace and others

+ Music later on by DJ madDELISH

They will have several pieces of installation art on display throughout the space, depictions of our vision of our new layout, gallery presentations of work created either at Artisan’s Asylum or by Asylum members, instructors or volunteers, information tables about all of our upcoming programs and opportunities, and complimentary food and drink throughout the night.
