"What the Fluff?" is presented by Union Square Main Streets as part of ArtsUnion, an initiative shepherded by the Somerville Arts Council and funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The event is made possible thanks to generous sponsors, local business support, talented team leaders and a magnificent group of volunteers.

This year we embrace that most enticing of Fluff creations, the Whoopie Pie.  Often chocolate but sometimes in other flavors from vanilla to carrot to pumpkin, the Whoopie Pie is not properly a sandwich, not quite a cupcake, oddly not even a pie -- like Marshmallow Fluff itself, it's in a class by itself.

Learn about the glorious tradition of the Whoopie Pie.

Performances: Nothing says fun like disco so we're super psyched to welcome Booty Vortex to this year's What the Fluff?

Cooking Contest: We all know Fluff can be used in a number of excellent recipes. We're bringing in a bigger panel of judges to take on the big team of competitors. This year we welcome the palate of Jay Santos, chef of Gargoyles and finalist on Fox-TV's reality show "Hell's Kitchen."  He'll be joined by a team from Precinct.

Planning to enter the competition? Get more details and  download the entry form.

Fabulous Pharaoh of Fluff: Will you be our glorious leader in all things Fluff? In 2009 you elected Cevin Soling and there he is, waving to his sweet subjects with Mayor Joe Curtatone and the 2008 Pharaoh Kristina Smarz welcoming him to his year of reign.

To be our Fabulous Pharaoh of Fluff, write a haiku or limerick related to Fluff and submit your poem before Tuesday, September 21 via Facebook

Finalists will be selected by Pharaoh Cevin and the Right Fluff Team.  You will be notified if you are selected as a finalist by Thursday, September 23.

During the festival finalists will read their poem from the Main Stage. At a voting booth attendees can select their favorite. Poets are encouraged to campaign for votes.

The winner will be crowned Fabulous Pharaoh of Fluff and  formally sworn in at 6:30 from the Main Stage. The headpiece is a magnificent creation by local creative masters CostumeWorks.

Light & Fluffy Shenanigans & Prizes: Take part in a wide array of wacky games.  We'll see the return of favorites including The Fluff Lick-Off, Blind Man's Fluff, and the Fluff roulette we call Fluff Fear Factor, as well as some new silliness like "Pin the F on Fluff Boy" and Sweet Fortune Fishing.

Fluff Stuff & Grub:

Vendors with lots of Fluff treats make this a real party. You'll find a wacky collection of times, from Fluff t-shirts to soaps that look like 'smores, from savory barbeque to whoopie pies.  Vendor applications will be ready in June. Pictured is the soap from Dirty Ass Soap. Realistic, eh?

Getting in the Mood: Fluff will be all over Union Square.  From Fluffernutter sandwiches and fancy desserts to Fluff inspired cocktails, even deep discounts and after-festival parties, everyone's getting in on the celebration.

Pictured is Jerry over at P.A.'s Lounge sipping a Fluffachino.
