Union Square in Somerville offers a wealth of dining options, with culinary influences from all over the globe and approaches ranging from neighborhood comfort food to upscale modernist.
Travel with us to three of top destinations for a progressive dinner to Casa B, The Independent, and Journeyman.
The chefs at each location will provide diners with a specially prepared course and a paired libation, providing you with a taste of both an ingredient made right here in Somerville and that chef’s unique point of view. The focus is on good food and a good time.
We’ll start at 6:30 at Casa B, Union Square’s newest restaurant, opening just last December. Owners Alberto Cabre and Angelina Jockovich serve up tapas and pinchos, embracing romanticism, warmth and the spice of Latin-America. They’ll have a selection of delectable tapas ready for us and a glass of their exquisite sangria.
Next is The Independent where seasonal and sustainable ingredients are prepared classically. This long-time neighborhood favorite will serve up a savory course and paired beverage.
We end the evening at Journeyman where chefs Tse Wei Lim and Diana Kudajarova source their ingredients from small artisan producers to prepare elegant food that always surprises. They promise to end our delicious night memorably.
This is the first of what we hope becomes a series of tours to Union Square’s restaurant and night life destinations.
There’s just 24 seats for the dinner, with either an omnivore or vegetarian meal option.

Every winter, with our partners at the Community Growing Center, the Somerville Public Schools, and Tufts University, Groundwork Somerville taps local maple trees and collects the sap. Simultaneously, GWS staff and community volunteers teach a four-week arts and science curriculum to second graders at several public schools. The season culminates in a spectacular two-day boil-down event held at the Somerville Community Growing Center. Metal shop students from Somerville High made the evaporator pan and maintain all the equipment each year. The syrup is given as thank-you gifts to community partners and sold at the GWS stand at the Union Square Farmers’ Market and at Sherman Market.
Join us at the Somerville Community Growing Center (22 Vinal Ave.) to celebrate the finale of the 2012 syruping season for the Maple Boil Down Festival on Saturday, March 3 from 10 am to 2 pm. Watch and learn as sap from local trees is boiled down into pure maple syrup over a warm fire. Join us for syrup- tasting, music, kids’ activities, and more! Waffles, syrup, and long sleeve T-shirts will be on sale to support the Somerville Maple Syrup Project. Free and open to the public.
