With three new businesses opening this week, Union Square is positively electric! Each are in slightly hidden spaces, bringing the off beat, innovative, and unique flavor that is Union Square.
Backbar opens this Friday. While this cocktail lounge is a companion to Journeyman Restaurant, with a similar commitment to the seasonal, the local and the innovative, it will have an identity all its own. Manager Sam Treadway, formerly of Drink, mixes together his passion for fine cocktails with the Journeyman approach. True to its name, backbar is behind Journeyman. Slither down Sanborn Court, enter the simple door, and wander down a long hallway to the hidden spot.
On Saturday, Casa B opens its doors to the general public. Owners Alberto Cabré from San Juan, Puerto Rico and Angelina Jockovich from Barranquilla, Colombia find a home for their Latin American fusion cuisine and sense of generous hospitality in Union Square. This restaurant is on the central parking lot, between Ronnarong Thai Tapas and Cantina La Mexicana. The single storefront presence on the street is deceiving; the basement level is more than double in size, and is so light and lush and green.
Across the street over on Prospect Street CrossFit Somervilleis already in action. The fitness center is at 35 Prospect Street, where Souza Brothers Foreign Auto used to be, just behind the Dunkin Donuts. The format here is focused more similarly to a personal coaching facility than the typical gym. Members learn the fitness fundamentals and then continue on to master and practice the skills to increase strength, agility, stamina, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, and power. The video below is from Dana Woulfe, documenting the mural that dominates the space.
